4 Ways To Be A Mom & Yourself at the Same Time

When becoming a mom, it is too easy to lose yourself in being all that your baby needs. It’s something we learn quick & pretty much goes without saying: they. come. first. That’s fine and dandy, we expect that when going into parenthood, right? Well, this doesn’t mean you have to come in dead last either, mama. I am a firm believer in the theory that one must take care of themselves, in order to take care of others. As wives, mothers, and women in general, this is what we are made to do! We are the almighty nurturers and no one can do it quite like us. In order to fulfill and maintain that glorious role, we have got to be in the best shape possible mentally, emotionally and even physically!

My first week of being a new mom was bliss (despite my double chin, don't judge). The transition didn’t bother me one bit because I was so elated to finally have my first baby in my arms. But once the hormones started regulating and the sleep deprivation kicked in, I was a sobbing mess once my husband came home from work. I was not familiar with these feelings of helplessness, anxiety, and frustration. I was upset for even feeling those emotions. However, it is totally normal and we all go through it. Find comfort in the fact that, if you are feeling this way, you are not alone and it does not last forever! With that all being said, my point here is you have make time for yourself. Common sense isn't so common when you're so tired you don't even know what day it is! So here are 4 tips that I, & many other mothers, would personally recommend:
SLEEP/EAT Both are equally important and we cannot function properly without either one. Therefore, these are top priority. You’d think they’d be common sense but..you’d also be surprised at how much moms try to accomplish aside from just being a mom. If anyone understands trying to “do it all”, it’s me ladies. But let me tell you..its ok to NOT do it all. Don’t sacrifice your sanity for bragging rights. So sleep when baby sleeps, eat when baby eats. When you get the hang of things, move on to my next tips!
GET YOURSELF READY Before you yell at me in your head, don’t. I know this sounds silly because who has time to get ready right? You do. The saying is true: when you look good, you feel good, and when mama feels good..she becomes unstoppable. You put clean clothes on, add some lipstick and all of a sudden, everything else you needed to do gettin' done. The 5 minutes it takes to put an outfit on and brush your hair will make all the difference!
GET OUTSIDE Go for a walk, do a stroller workout, do some mommy & me yoga, or just sit together in the grass and take pictures. Any time outside is a good time! The best thing is that you can wear baby or put them in the stroller for any of these options, and these were just the activities I opted for! Feel free to BE FREE outside.
GET AWAY By this I mean: get away from yourself. Get out of your own head, and out of that crazy daily routine you’ve been thrown into. Motherhood is..so many wonderful things. It is not, however, without its major challenges as well. So get away by taking a candle lit bubble bath when baby is down for the night. Indulge in some wine and your favorite read. Go get a massage and blast your favorite music on the way there. Getting away will help you get back to the happy, vibrant woman that is now a mom, too. It will help conjoin the two beings, into one super bad-ass lady mom.
If none of these things seem to be your thing, there’s always Pinterest! This app is my BFF when it comes to finding ways to spoil myself affordably! Take a look at my Pinterest boards and grab some ideas of your own. Whatever it is, be sure to let your hair down from that “I-don’t-have-time-to-get-ready” bun and relax.

What are you struggling with at this point in your motherhood journey?
If you have any other tips, let me hear 'em!

  2. Definitely need to check out the apps. I'm horrible at keeping receipts! But, why not add a bit of change back in my pocket just by snapping a quick pic!

    1. I used to be bad at remembering to keep receipts too, but then I began using a designated envelope, then upgraded to a coupon accordion-thing (the name of it is just beyond me right now lol). Let me know which one you like best!

  3. Exercise is HUGE for me! I feel so much more energized and positive if I can workout in the morning. I feel like I'm a better mom because I'm more likely to take my girls to get out and do something rather than just sit at home feeling grumpy. I also swear by making plans with friends. Even if you just have a baby and they can't really participate in anything yet, meet up with friends at a park or pool in the summer. That makes me feel sane and more like myself, and gives some structure to our days so they aren't so longggggg ;)

    1. Hey Claire! Yesss exercise actually gave me energy too, & just like you said, when done in the morning, I was ready to take on the rest of the day. This is why I made it a tip, I think many moms underestimate the positive impact exercise will have on them all the way around. So happy you could relate :) Thanks for commenting!
